Formal Training

We have a carefully designed training curriculum to ensure that individuals' skills development keeps pace with their tenure at BCG. Local, regional and global training is arranged by cohort to enable people to deal with relevant issues at each stage of their careers and to provide an opportunity for cohorts to share experiences and build networks. In addition, our practice groups organise regional and global conferences on industry-specific topics.

Regional training is overseen by a Partner and managed by our Regional Training Manager, assisted by the Regional Training Coordinator. Each office also has a local training resource. A regional cadre of consultants with a strong interest in training, facilitation and coaching provides additional support at the local level.

The most intensive formal training occurs during a new hire's first few months at BCG. Following orientation in their local offices, all new recruits in Asia Pacific convene for a week-long regional orientation program in Australia, Bangkok or Shanghai.

Orientation
Regional orientation training is designed to provide new hires with the core consulting skills they need for their first year at BCG. There is a lot to learn in one week, which is why regional orientation is also known as 'boot camp'. But the days of intensive learning are balanced by nights of intensive fun, in which new hires in the region get to know each other and often form strong friendships. For the last few days of this program, new hires participate in a simulated case that provides a fun and challenging introduction to the project team environment.

After orientation, our staff attend annual regional and/or global training programs, supplemented by local office training every 1-2 months. Fortnightly “virtual classrooms” provide our consultants with an opportunity to connect with global experts on the firm’s latest thinking and to brush up on key consulting skills and tools.

Classroom training is complemented by e-learning, especially during the first year. Basic analytical skills are learned through multimedia, interactive, on-line 'eModules'. In addition, a number of interactive PowerPoint 'ePrimers' on a broad range of topics provide 'on-demand' training. BCG also offers a training library of self-study videos, books and CDs, and a range of materials on our global Knowledge Management database.

Finally, our consultants will tell you that the most powerful learning invariably happens on the job.
