BCG considers Asia, excluding Japan, as one system in our Asia-Pacific network of offices. This region is known as 'East and South Asia', or E&SA. The Asia-Pacific network also includes the Australia-New Zealand (BCG ANZ) and Japan systems. In E&SA, we have four sub-regions: Southeast Asia, Greater China, Korea, and India. Each of these sub-regions is managed independently within the overall network, and each consultant is considered to be a member of a particular sub-region, although each also has a home office.
This structure has benefits for our clients, as well as for our professional staff. First, by staffing projects with consultants across each region, we draw on a larger pool of people and ensure that each project team has the experience, capabilities and language skills it needs for the project and the location. At the same time, each of us has the opportunity to work on a variety of cases across a variety of cultures and geographies. This structure also means that each case team is multicultural, usually comprising people from several offices, so we can gain from exposure to new cultural experiences even when we're staffed on a project in our home country.
A consultant from Singapore will work in Bangkok, or an associate from Jakarta will be based in Kuala Lumpur for a project, flying home on weekends. We also have people from other systems working with us in E&SA. A typical case team in Asia may involve individuals from multiple Asian offices, as well as from the Australia-New Zealand, Japan, European and American systems. We have a flexible system that can be adjusted to suit both the needs of clients and the personal and professional needs of our consultants.
